Succulents are a perfect plant for those who travel, work long hours or the ones who do not enjoy taking constant care numerous times of the day. They are low-maintenance houseplants and very fun to deal with. However, they need a safe and healthy place to be held.

In this article, we will make sure to provide you with all the details you’ll need to go through before you decide to have a pot for your succulent.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipisicing elit. Debitis inventore blanditiis, maiores totam aliquid ducimus impedit fuga sunt quod dolorum suscipit ex vero tenetur beatae autem error culpa. Ipsam, laborum!

1. Drainage

Succulents use their leaves to maintain most of the water, which makes them drought-tolerant and also trouble free houseplants when it comes to taking care of them. For that reason, it is necessary for succulents to excess water as simply as possible.

In this case, we would suggest choosing a drainage pot, which will help excess the water easily and prevent any risk of root rot.

Mostly, succulent pots are without any drainage holes. But do not worry, there are other options that can help. In case you want to have a pot without a drainage hole, you can always use a pot hole mesh pad for your succulents to excess water normally.

2. Material

Having the proper pot for your succulent, put us in a place where we’ll need to find the right material for our plant. There are different types of pot materials such as: terracotta and ceramic, plastic, wood, metal and glass.

  • If you’d like to have your succulents indoors,in a dark place with a normal heat, we would definitely recommend terracotta and ceramic pots , which have a breathable material and are excellent for places with not much airflow or direct sunlight. But be aware that direct sunlight makes the terracotta material heat up, which can risk your succulent’s health.

  • Plastic pots on the other hand are a perfect option for those of you who want to move their plants in different places frequently, as they are lighter than the terracotta and ceramic ones. However, you will need to buy a plastic pot with drainage holes, as the plastic material itself makes it hard for the water to evaporate and the plant to breath normally. Plastic pots are perfect for indoor and outdoor maintenance too.

Other materials are suggested as well, but you have to make sure you take constant care with those. Glass and wood pots make your succulent look amazing, but you should keep these pots mostly indoors, as these materials tend to change the temperature often, which increases the potential of your plant to shrivel up.

  • If you are thinking of purchasing a wood pot , you should be careful of the watering process, as the wood material has the tendency to keep the water and that makes it risky for your succulents to stay healthy as the plant will not have the possibility to evaporate the water.

  • Glass and metal pots are amazing for indoors as well, but be careful of the temperature. As materials, they tend to change the temperature constantly and that makes the roots of your succulent get weak and this is why those materials are suggested for indoors houseplants

3. Size

The important thing about size is that we always need to get a pot that gives our succulent enough space to grow easily. Select a pot that is large enough to give your plant the possibility to grow, but not too large.

Too much space prevents your succulent from growing larger, because the roots spread out before the succulent has the possibility to catch up. The perfect size pot has an outline that’s about 10 % larger than what the size of the plant would be.

4. Roots

Different succulents have different types of roots.

  • For succulents with hairy roots, it is always recommended to use a shallow pot. Hairy roots tend to grow on the soil surface to absorb moisture and that is why shallow pots are the best choice for this type.

  • However, there are succulents with roots as taproots. These roots tend to always grow deeper in search for water. In that case, the perfect pot for these succulents would be a deeper than usual pot filled with nutrition soil.
